Poetry festival, publishing fair and art exhibition. Installation view. Kunsthal Aarhus

Verbale Pupiller (2009)

Verbale Pupiller (trans. Verbal Eyes) is an international festival of new poetry. It was originally founded as a Scandinavian venture, however we undertake not to limit ourselves by geographical matters, precisely because poetry itself has no limits—it is always on the move. The new cannot be contained or fixed, and it should be seen as a continuous movement, as poetry moves from one discourse to another, shuffling between other media and other art forms, between thought or object, or simply between people...
*

Verbale Pupiller is also a publishing fair for small or medium-sized publishing houses as well as various Scandinavian periodicals, all of which deal with different art forms and different circumstances surrounding art. They are brought together owing to their focused thematic intersections and shared solidarities. One common feature is that they all proceed, more or less explicitly, from a wish for independence and idealism, and they actively seek out possibilities for implementing just that...

Participating publishers:
Edition After Hand, Apparatur, Arena, Ark, Forlaget * [asterisk], Basilisk, Den Blå Port, Bokbål, dada-invest, diafrag art & publishing, Distribusjon, Edition, emanicipa(t/ss)ionsfrugten, Fingerprint, Geiger Records / Lyd+Litteratur, hurricane publishing, Jorinde & Joringel, Koordinat, Litlive, Møllegades Boghandel, Narration Tee, OEI, A Shoal of Mackerel, Space Poetry, Standart, Torpedo.

Verbale Pupiller is also an exhibition featuring works by 28 Danish and international visual artists. In their works, the artists engage with various “book-like” qualities in the form of text, bookness, narration, and similar elements—drawing references to the book, literature, writing, and the broader Verbale Pupiller program.
The installation of the exhibition evokes the way books are arranged and organized: according to different systems and principles that may not always be entirely transparent. The exhibition unfolds like a walk along a very long bookshelf, where—while perhaps searching for something entirely different—you may become distracted and stumble upon something unexpectedly new and unfamiliar.
